TIP

TIP - Start betting with your friends!

Tip is the first lovechild of in-house app development at the agency I worked at. It's an app made from scratch and I was in charge of the whole journey from ideation to development. It was a huge learning experience to create a product from nothing and turn it into a launch ready app.

Tip is the most entertaining way to make bets with your friends. You can bet about any topic, set the stakes you want and invite your friends to bet with you. The mobile app keeps track of your bets and remembers your record.  Tip is available for download in App Store.

Understanding users - From messy excel sheets to a sleek app

The idea of Tip started with a notion that betting among friends can be cumbersome. You either need to pass around an answer sheet or you have simply forgotten what everybody bet on by the time the results are out. We found out that all existing products are targeted to a very masculine audience. Our first step was to find out who our audience really is, what do they bet about and with who. We collected and analysed survey data to give shape to our ideal customer, which revealed to be a gender neutral, social butterfly. We tested early prototypes with our users to find the right priorities for the app.

Sketching key interactive elements

The first step of sketching was do define the most important interactive screen element. After sketching with paper and pen, the first digital drafts were created in Sketch resulting in a mini library of frequently used screen elements to keep the design and interactions of the product coherent.

From a dummy to dynamic

The app first came together as an InVision prototype. Paper sketches and the sitemap were transferred into an interactive prototype. The prototype was developed in sprints and screens were tested in the end of each UX sprint. After the tests, design and development sprints kicked off and the app transformed from a dummy to dynamic web app.

Design as a differentiation strategy

While conducting competitor analysis, we noticed that similar products in the field lack great design. Our goal was to make the app stand out. By dividing competitors into visual categories, we defined an area where differentiation would occur, and the keywords “modern with a cheerful twist” was used to create the UI Concept. The techniques and technical decisions made during the development process focused on building a smooth mobile app that is flexible for future iterations. This was realised by creating a hybrid app built with a combination of latest web technologies.

Growing with the internet's own language

Betting is a social interaction which is why we have chosen a social media centric approach. The way we communicate about Tip is by using internet’s own language - MEMES! We see the development of Tip as a journey and keep testing and improving the app continuously. In the future we will release the app on several platforms, launch new features and collaborate with popular events. Download Tip from App Store and see for yourself!
