VR Matkalla

VR Matkalla - Enjoy a meal on the train delivered to your seat

VR is a company that provides passenger services of railways in Finland operating more than 1000 trains daily. VR Matkalla is a mobile app that is there for VR customers to support each step of their journey. This case shows the process and the outcome of a new feature that allows customers to order food from the restaurant car delivered directly to their seat.

My role was to designing the UX, UI and test my designs with users. I also handed over my work to developers and was continuously testing the functionality and UI during the development phase.

First version out of the system and off to user test

When I joined VR an early concept for the new feature existed with some initial UIs, which I quickly updated to match with new and updated requirements. The use of this feature is limited to time during a train trip when users can order food delivered to their seats. Therefore, I figured that it would be useful to test the concept on the train to learn contextual insights about the potential of this feature.

Detailed look - Illustrations & component specifications

To make the food ordering experience more delightful (and hopefully to go faster) I created a set of illustrations visualizing the stages of the delivery process. To make implementation go smoothly I created symbols with specifications for new components.

Getting ready for launch - End-to-end testing

I planned and conducted a final round of user testing with 2 end-users. This round of testing consisted of both the consumer-facing app for making orders (designed by me) and an internal tool for managing the orders. As a result, we got a list of improvements for us, and as well important insights on how the internal tool can be improved. I designed 3 test scenarios to demonstrate successful and failure scenarios.

Final product

After various iterations and a bit more user testing the final visuals found their shape and were handed over to the development team. More findings and iterations did come up as the developers worked their magic and found the blind spots in my designs, but that’s the charm of agile! :)
